Untimely, however, was the sudden death of the author, in 1957, before the completion of this work. He had pioneered in demonstrating the acoustic vibrations of the eardrum and ossicular chain by means of stroboscopic cinematography. His "staging" of these highly successful films revealed him to be a master showman as well as an outstanding educator. Such observations and his knowledge of the subject in general form the basis of his contributions, mainly to the first part, discussing the middle ear in health and disease. Alvar Wilka and J. E.
