Certain contact sports, especially when competition is intense, are too severe for immature boys. Puberty is one criterion for maturity, but the best basis for advice regarding participation in sports is examination by the physician, in his office, at regular intervals from infancy. On this basis the physician can do much to insure the proper choice of sports and to protect the child from injury and exploitation. Cooperation between physician and coach is important to this end.
