His role in the educational team may not be evident to him, to his senior colleagues, or to the medical student. His abilities and obligations need to be more adequately defined. This will enable him to make an orderly approach to basic principles, to develop teaching skill, and to exercise initiative. He can use ancillary teaching methods, such as reading assignments or conferences, that can be very effective as supplements to ward rounds. Efficient communication of significant information thus becomes a greater reality to the educational team, with improved care of the sick as the ultimate goal.
