A new addition in this field is a procedure for treatment of coarctation of the aorta of the adult type. In this anomaly a short segment of the aorta in the region of the ligamentum arteriosum is constricted and the lumen of the vessel reduced, usually to a diameter of 6 mm. or less. The circulation to the portion of the body below the level of stenosis, is maintained by anastomoses between branches of the subclavian and axillary arteries and the intercostal arteries which arise from the aorta below the site of constriction.In the past, recognition of coarctation of the aorta was of academic interest only, but because a form of surgical treatment is now available, its detection has become a matter of
