Perhaps the most valuable functional test is that which measures the energy cost of physical exercise. Among such tests is the one developed by Nylin. The results of his experience are presented in this monograph. The test used by him consists of three degrees of exertion on a pair of semicircular stairs each having six steps going up and six going down. The effect of these exercises on the oxygen consumption was determined by comparing the basal rate with the increased rate occurring from two to five minutes after completing the exercise. Both metabolic tests were run with the patient reclining in bed. As the result of an experience on 265 normal persons and twenty-two patients with various forms of cardiac and pulmonary disease, the author states that this test gives an
