AB The author has collected a number of essays in a volume published under a grant from the Louis Clark Vanuxem Foundation. The book includes a brief account of medical progress with philosophic reflections. Especially interesting are the chapters on medical education, those on the neuroses and the concluding chapters, in which the author expresses his concept of the future of medicine. If one wished to be hypercritical, one could easily point out the discrepancies in thought between the chapters on medical education, on medicine as a career and on medical ethics with the conclusions presented in the chapters on the social outlook in medicine. Yet one does not wish the author to be scientific in his leisurely contemplation of medical sociology and medical economics. He approaches the field as an amateur and it is interesting to have him present his own point of view, which does not seem to be
