After a consideration of these investigations, it seemed advisable to us to test the activity of gastric tissue itself. Work was started at the Simpson Memorial Institute on the nature of the material in stomach which could produce a hematopoietically active substance, but the experiments were later carried on with the association of Dr. Elwood A. Sharp, director of the department of experimental medicine of Parke, Davis and Company.
