A critical factor in this reduction in diarrhea deaths has been the
widespread adoption of oral rehydration solution (ORS) programs for the treatment
and prevention of diarrhea-associated dehydration.6- 7 Indeed,
ORS has been hailed as one of the most important medical advances of the past
century,8 at least in part because of its simplicity,
low cost, and remarkable ease of use.
