I was surprised by the data cited by Cornia et al showing the pretest probability for pertussis for a patient who has been coughing for 1 week or longer to be 12% to 32%.2 This is markedly higher than that found in the more recent trial of the acellular pertussis vaccine, in which the prevalence of pertussis in unvaccinated participants was only 1.7% at 3 weeks and only 5.7% at 8 weeks.3
