For many practitioners, including general pediatricians and adult or emergency medicine physicians, exposure to such scenarios is thankfully uncommon. Physicians and trainees in other specialties need to develop the ability to manage the care of these children but often lack the available pediatric expertise in addition to decreased experience in a pediatric setting. Understanding the anatomical and physiological differences between children and adults is a key principle in effective management of these patients.
