This contradicts the results of our Swedish 2-center randomized controlled trial of 2000 patients in which we found a 53% reduction in sternal wound infection rate.2 A follow-up study after many years of use of prophylaxis showed a maintained effect.3 Because of financial limitations, our investigator-initiated study did not incorporate quality-control measures comparable with the study by Bennett-Guerrero et al. However, there are other important differences between the trials.
