Smutty Nose, Drunken Gut, Washerwoman, Burnthead, Deadman Cove, Herring Gut—these are the evocative names of the geographical locales on and surrounding Monhegan. Although only 1½ miles long and mile wide, with a year-round population around 60, it contains 17 miles of hiking trails. There are no cars or paved roads.
