Although we strongly endorse the organization of deep brain stimulation clinical studies in registries, we fully appreciate that such registries can only be organized once initial studies occur. However, once a putative discovery is conveyed through the publication of a single case study, we believe that responsible investigators should initiate a fuller clinical trial and register their findings in a way that allows for generalizable analysis. Single case reports are legitimate vehicles for the reporting of important discoveries, but serial publication of such reports is antithetical to the scientific method.
