To the Editor: In their Commentary, Drs Schlaepfer and Fins1 argued for starting a registry for deep brain stimulation, similar to the various registries for randomized controlled trials. The aim of the registry would be to prevent media attention for chance successes. However, the authors do not describe the advantages and disadvantages of different types of case studies in medical research,2 such as serendipitous case studies and formal case studies. Publication of certain case studies can be justified even without a compulsory prior registration process.
