The authors suggested that 2 factors may have accounted for similar outcomes in both groups: (1) participants in both groups also received an adjunctive active therapy (eccentric exercise) with known efficacy for Achilles tendinopathy, and (2) control participants may have experienced a substantial placebo effect due to invasive treatment and subsequent heightened expectations. However, other aspects of the interventions could have contributed to the negative findings and deserve consideration in the context of this trial and in the conduct of similar clinical trials.
