In Reply: In response to Dr Bihorac and colleagues, our matched cohort study was designed to compare the risks for chronic dialysis and long-term mortality among survivors of combined AKI and acute dialysis (AKI-dialysis) vs individuals who had neither. Thus, our participant selection process deliberately excluded patients who died or received dialysis soon after hospital discharge, since we were interested in generating data on the long-term prognosis of survivors with some degree of short-term kidney recovery—the group in whom our findings are most externally applicable. The same exclusion criteria were applied to individuals with and without AKI-dialysis.
