The researchers implanted healthy human cartilage with RASFs from patients with rheumatoid arthritis under the skin of immunodeficient mice; cartilage without fibroblasts was implanted on the opposite flank. The synovial fibroblasts attacked not only the cartilage with which they were coimplanted, they also actively migrated through blood vessels to the other side, leading to cartilage destruction in the previously RASF-free site as well.
