Stroke medicine can be straightforward, but it is often complex. This is particularly true in managing the correct clinical approach to patients with stroke, a heterogeneous syndrome with a multitude of clinical manifestations and underlying pathologies. The many syndromes and options for diagnosis and management of patients with stroke are often bewildering, even for experienced neurologists. Although several texts on cerebrovascular disease are available, none matches Caplan's Stroke: A Clinical Approach. This is more than a monograph about stroke; it is the main avenue that the neurologist or internist interested in cerebrovascular disease should travel together with the patient who has had a stroke.
