This fifth edition of Neurology of the Newborn has been revised and updated to provide a comprehensive review of a field that has not only contributed markedly to the reduction in newborn mortality observed worldwide over the past 50 years (World Health Organization 2008 statistics, available at http://www.who.int) but has also recently contributed to decreased rates of children surviving with neurologic disability due to peripartal brain injury.1 Neurologic care of the newborn, which often entails intensive care, is of critical importance to patients and families. With infant morbidity and mortality remaining major indicators of the quality of health care systems, society needs well-trained neonatal neurologists. This textbook is an important contribution toward achieving this goal.
