The 2 new guidelines, issued by the American Academy of Neurology, were built on evidence-based reviews of the current state of ALS science and update the previous guidelines, published in 1999. The first of these addresses drug, nutritional, and respiratory therapies for patients with ALS (Miller RG et al. Neurology. 2009;73[15]:1218-1226). The second focuses on multidisciplinary care, symptom management, and cognitive and behavioral impairment of such patients (Miller RG et al. Neurology. 2009;73[15]:1227-1233).
