Maritime themes seem to fit naturally for the work of the grandson of Massachusetts seafarer Captain Samuel Benson. Born in Salem, then educated in Boston and in Paris, Frank Benson returned to his family home—the ancestral house that had belonged to the Captain—and there reared his own brood of 4 children with his beloved wife Ellie. Benson's long career spanned the ebb of the 19th century and the swell of the 20th; he deposited many paintings, beautiful treasures, like seashells on his life's sandy shore.
