These encyclopedic reference books generally provide comprehensive, well-researched discussions on relevant pediatric surgical conditions. The chapters are often thorough and complemented by a reference list for further reading. Useful as they are, however, these reference works are of little value to the medical student gaining his or her first experience with pediatric surgery or to the house officer struggling to survive his or her first rotation in the field. This junior audience is greatly in need of a concise, accurate, and approachable text that is able to provide them with the core fundamental knowledge about the pediatric surgical conditions with which they are confronted.
