In this examination of Henry Gray's well-known textbook, Ruth Richardson combines the history of medicine, social history, and the history of books and publishing. Richardson is best known for her work on the 1832 Anatomy Act in Britain, and she also wrote the Historical Introduction to the 40th edition (2008) of Gray's Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice, and so is well placed to write this history. Gray's Anatomy is a book with which many generations of medical students are familiar. So how did this deceptively familiar volume come into being?
