The GAO said data from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) showed that 63% of service members with traumatic brain injury were approved for the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection Program, which was established in 2005. However, the report noted, the percentage might actually be lower because the VA and the Department of Defense (DoD) lack assurance that claim decisions are accurate, consistent, and timely within and across the services.
