An annual average of 6.2% of noninstitutionalized children enrolled in Medicaid took 1 or more psychotropic medications (including medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, antidepressants, and antipsychotic agents), compared with 4.8% of privately insured children (http://tinyurl.com/a855epg), according to the GAO's analysis. The data showed that 1.3% of children enrolled in Medicaid took antipsychotic medications, more than twice the rate for privately insured children.
