The researchers examined the incidence of TBI across all age groups and severity spectrums in rural and urban populations from 1 geographical area in New Zealand in a large, population-based study undertaken during 2010-2011, the Brain Injury Outcomes New Zealand in the Community (BIONIC) study. The estimates, the researchers said, are the first to include more mild cases of TBI, which are thought to comprise the majority of such events. Cases of mild TBI, often overlooked because they are not usually treated in the hospital, can result in long-term deficits.
