The discovery was possible through the use of 2 recent innovations—in vivo crystallization and serial femtosecond crystallography. Scientists in Germany, Sweden, and the United States grew crystals of TbCatB inside live insect cells, freezing the enzyme in its natural state. Then they exposed the crystals to x-ray lasers, with pulses so intense and fast that they could capture structural information before a sample was damaged.
