A new inhibitor can help previously nicotine-addicted rats avoid relapse. Researchers from the University of Toronto found that long-term nicotine exposure causes 2 ligand-gated ion channels—α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) and NMDA glutamate receptors (NMDARs)—to interact and form a protein complex in the brain and that this interaction can be disrupted by an inhibitor (Li S et al.
