The original art on this cover of JAMA is an homage to René Magritte and his iconic painting, The Son of Man. For Magritte, the apple was a recurrent motif, appearing in a variety of contexts. However, in popular culture, the apple represents health (“an apple a day . . . ”) and education (giving an apple to a teacher), an appropriate symbol for this theme issue on medical education.
