Part 1 provides a history of sedation and basic pharmacologic and physiologic principles and how these differ as they apply to pediatric patients. Review of the development of sedation policies and references to interested agencies (regulatory and advocacy) and their recommendations are highlighted. These chapters coalesce nicely to provide a primer for the nonanesthesiologist looking for accepted principles in approaching sedation and safety for the pediatric patient.
