The researchers identified a new form of the Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (Salmonella Typhimurium) that is causing the lethal human invasive nontyphoidal disease. Using whole-genome sequencing, they compared sub-Saharan iNTS isolates to the more common NTS isolates from other parts of the world where the bacteria causes food poisoning that is rarely fatal.
