The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) launched the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) in 2003 to map the regulatory regions of the genome. Over the past several years, researchers have had free access to the project's results through online databases (such as http://www.encodeproject.org/ENCODE/). A few preliminary articles were also published. Then, in September, a set of 30 articles describing the findings of the project so far were published and made freely available on a unique platform created by the journal Nature (http://www.nature.com/encode/) to highlight interrelated threads of evidence emerging from the project.
