Consistent with the Shingles Prevention Study1 that defined postherpetic neuralgia as new or persistent pain for more than 90 days after the onset of incident zoster, we defined incident postherpetic neuralgia using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision codes 053.13, 053.19, and 053.9 and required that these occur at least 91 days after the onset of herpes zoster (code 053.XX) as identified in our previous analysis.
