The current paradigm of deceased organ donation is under significant pressure. Critics argue that individuals declared dead under current brain death and donation after circulatory death (DCD) protocols are still alive. This has led some to call for abandoning the dead donor rule to maintain, or even increase, the number of donors. Others have advocated for a regulated market for organs to increase organ supply. The contributors to The Ethics of Organ Transplantation argue that these proposed changes would be a further slide down a slippery slope and provide a defense of the status quo from a Roman Catholic perspective.
