Hypertension is a common clinical condition that affects more than 73 million adults (approximately 1 in 3) in the United States1- 3; the lifetime risk of developing hypertension has been estimated to be as high as 90%.4 Hypertension is also a global problem with the estimated total number of adults with hypertension worldwide in 2000 at 972 million with 333 million in developed countries and 639 million in developing countries.5 By 2025, the prevalence of hypertension is predicted to increase by about 60% to a total of 1.56 billion adults.1,5
