Like so many human inventions, Getcherarton was born at a time of great strife and violence. By strife, I mean while my team was getting annihilated at the residency dodge-ball tournament, and by violence, I mean my having just gotten pelted by a nasty curveball that one of the attendings had lobbed at someone else. As I stood on the sideline, cradling a stinging red forearm and nursing dark memories of childhood gym classes and being picked last for teams and inventing excuses to get out of doing anything athletic, I asked myself, Why does team building always seem to turn into an excuse to be competitive?
