The goal of these policies is to ensure that published reports are unbiased so that patients, physicians, and others can have confidence in and benefit from the information. Over the past 3 decades, scientific evidence has accumulated that bias can occur due to several major factors, including conflicts of interest, failure to register clinical trials, deviation from trial protocols, and failure to include all relevant data in reports of trials and other major studies.
