To the Editor: Drs Wang and Huang1 discussed concerns and visions for the future of electronic health record (EHR) technology. The rapid development and implementation of EHR systems in hospitals and practices executed in part to meet meaningful use funding has created a host of systems focused on those metrics, lacking readily apparent interoperability pathways and devoid of engagement features to improve the user experience. As vendors were vying to position their system as the EHR of choice, too many proprietary systems were adopted, which has also created problems for intersystem communication and added more confusion and frustration to the process.
