Accompanying Lussac on his expedition to the crater of Vesuvius in the autumn of 1805 were Leopold von Buch, Simón Bolívar, and Alexander von Humboldt.I mention Humboldt because he is no longer accorded the recognition he enjoyed during his lifetime.Five years from now (Sept. 14, 1969) we shall have the opportunity of celebrating the bicentennial of his birth. I am deeply interested in according him a dignified celebration and would be thankful to hear from others who are so inclined.
