AB The book covers the first annual lectures by the author as professor at the Collège de France. His fundamental idea is to show that bone is an important physiologic unit in the service of the "milieu interior" and not simply a mechanical support for the body. It constitutes a reserve interposed between the digestive calcium and the tissue calcium without which the body could not maintain its equilibrium. Thus in both health and disease affecting calcium metabolism the calcium of bones is in an incessant state of movement. This is true both in general and in local diseases of the skeleton as well as in injury and experiments affecting it. He discusses both the lysis and the deposition of calcium in disease processes in terms of general calcium metabolism. The work is of distinctly a philosophic character involving a great deal of theory as well as clinical and experimental observation
