The venerable third edition, published in 1985, was a concise, readable resource for medical students, residents, fellows, and clinicians. With more than a thousand pages, 25 chapters written by 41 authors, and 3 appendices, the new fourth edition is no longer concise. However, it remains an invaluable and affordable resource for the previous edition's target audience. The book has been completely rewritten and brought into the information age—purchasers of the textbook receive access to a website providing interactive content.
