Mice lacking the Ifitm3 gene, which encodes IFITM3, developed severe pneumonia when exposed to an influenza virus with normally low pathogenicity. The animals' lung pathology was similar to that produced by infection of mice and primates with the pandemic 1918 H1N1 virus, or the “Spanish” flu. Also, increased viral replication in vitro in cells lacking Ifitm3 was suppressed with the reintroduction of Ifitm3.
