Although clinicians have successfully used electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to treat patients' severe depression for more than 70 years, the mechanisms by which it works remain unclear. Recent research from England suggests that use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to treat patients' severe depression has lasting effects on the functional architecture of a specific region of the brain (Perrin JP et al.
