What started as the “nuclear stethoscope” in the 1970s1 has evolved into a multidimensional, hybrid imaging technique that now serves as a workhorse imaging technology for the diagnosis and management of patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. Although the currently used technique of gated single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was developed a couple of decades ago, significant and important advances continue to be made. The time is thus appropriate for an updated, third edition of the Atlas of Nuclear Cardiology.2
