In the first trial, investigators from Pakistan and the United Kingdom assessed the effect of cleaning the umbilical cord with 4% chlorhexidine solution, with or without hand washing with antiseptic soap, in a cluster randomized trial involving 9741 babies in rural Pakistan. Chlorhexidine reduced the risk of infection and mortality while hand washing and standard dry cord care in the control group did not.
