An independent analysis led by investigators at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, casts doubt on the results of tobacco industry studies on the safety of cigarette additives (Wertz MS et al. PLoS Med. 8[12]: e1001145. doi:10.1371/journal.pmed.1001145). The analysis concerns data from scientists with the tobacco company Philip Morris, who studied the potential toxicity of 333 cigarette additives and generated 4 peer-reviewed publications concluding that they found no evidence of substantial toxicity attributable to the cigarette additives studied.
