World Health Organization guidelines recommend that children with severe pneumonia be treated in hospitals, but several barriers often limit access to these facilities in developing countries. To compare how well children recovered from severe pneumonia at home vs in a hospital, the researchers conducted a cluster randomized trial in which they examined 3211 children between the ages of 2 to 59 months with severe pneumonia in northern Pakistan.
