In Destiny of the Republic, Candice Millard tells the interwoven stories of Garfield, from his impoverished childhood in Ohio through academia, the military, and service in Congress en route to the presidency; Charles Guiteau, Garfield's assassin, a man consumed by delusions of grandeur; and Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone and the induction balance, a metal detector with which he hoped to localize the bullet lodged in Garfield's body. And then there is the story of the team of physicians, led by Willard Bliss, who cared for Garfield in the aftermath of the shooting.
