Point Lobos remains one of the most beautiful areas of California's bountiful coastline, and certainly one of its most frequently painted vistas. Slightly south of the small and storied town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, that special shore and its surrounding seas today are protected as the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. When Guy Rose (1867-1925) visited Carmel and Monterey in 1918, the artists' colony there was already established, having swelled with the creative community after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. Rose joined his fellow painters in one of the west coast locations where nature's inspiration—sea, mist, trees, rocks, clouds, and sky—stirred them to the style now known as California Impressionism.
