RT Journal A1 Stutsman ED, Bates A T1 A patient requesting physician-assisted suicide JF JAMA JO JAMA YR 2002 FD October 23 VO 288 IS 16 SP 1984 OP 1984 DO 10.1001/jama.288.16.1981 UL http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/jama.288.16.1981 AB To the Editor: Drs Bascom and Tolle1 described the case of a patient in Oregon who requested PAS from his physician under the Death With Dignity (DWD) law. The physician, opposed to his patient's choice, discontinued his care and referred the patient to hospice. Once there, the patient and his new physician embarked on an open exploration of health care options. It was only after this dialogue—a dialogue that all patients in these circumstances should be afforded—that the patient made a new decision. He and his physician collaborated on a treatment plan and the patient was able to end his days in a manner of his choosing.
